TunnelQuiz vs HackerRank: the aptitude round before the coding test.

HackerRank is a developer hiring platform. Candidates write and run code in 55+ languages, sit pair-programming interviews, and can be interviewed by Chakra, the AI interviewer HackerRank took out of beta in October 2026. TunnelQuiz does not run code yet. It runs the proctored multiple-choice and aptitude round that usually comes first in a campus or bulk drive, priced per candidate sitting rather than per attempt. Plenty of teams use both.

Three things that are different

Attempts per year, or candidates per month

HackerRank's Starter plan is $79 a month billed annually for 60 candidate attempts a year, and Pro is $419 a month for 360. Every extra attempt is $20, and unused attempts expire at the end of the billing cycle. TunnelQuiz's Essential plan is $34 a month billed yearly for 150 credits every month, and one credit is one candidate sitting. On Starter, a 400-person aptitude round uses the year's 60 attempts on its first 60 candidates.

The round before the coding test

A campus drive often starts with a few hundred students taking a quantitative, logical and verbal aptitude test, then a much shorter list writes code. TunnelQuiz is built for that first filter: question pools, negative marking, per-question timers and CSV import on every plan, with the screen captured every minute while they answer. Send the shortlist to HackerRank, where code execution matters.

Code execution is HackerRank's, for now

HackerRank runs candidate code against test cases, ships 2,000 to 7,500+ library questions depending on the plan, and offers live pair-programming interviews. TunnelQuiz takes coding questions in 19 languages on Pro, but an AI grades the answer and the code is not run. For the coding round itself, HackerRank is the stronger choice.

Why teams choose TunnelQuiz

Why teams choose TunnelQuiz over HackerRank

Reason 01

What a 400-student drive costs

On HackerRank's published pricing, 400 candidates on Starter means the year's 60 attempts plus 340 extra at $20, which is $6,800 on top of the plan. On TunnelQuiz, 400 sittings is 400 credits: Essential's 150 for the month plus 250 top-ups at up to $0.38 each, at most $95 on top of the plan.

Starter's attempts for the year, then $6,800 of extra attempts

TunnelQuiz
150 credits, then 250 top-ups

At most $95 on top of Essential, at up to $0.38 a credit

Reason 02

A screen you can look at

Every TunnelQuiz plan captures the candidate's whole screen once a minute and each time they come back to the test tab. When a score looks too good, you open the captures and the flag timeline and see what was open beside the test.

A timeline

Reason 03

Watch the round while it runs

From Essential, live monitoring lists every candidate in a sitting with their progress and flags as they arrive. On Pro, Live Follow shows one candidate's test page as they work, so a problem in a 400-person sitting gets noticed while it is still running.

Frequently asked questions

Is TunnelQuiz a HackerRank alternative?

For the aptitude and multiple-choice round of a hiring drive, yes, and at a much lower cost per candidate. For the coding round itself, not yet: HackerRank runs code in 55+ languages, has a large library and offers live coding interviews, and TunnelQuiz's coding questions are graded by AI without running the code.

How much does HackerRank cost?

As of October 2026, HackerRank's pricing page lists Starter at $79 a month billed annually ($948 a year) with 60 candidate attempts a year, and Pro at $419 a month billed annually ($5,028 a year) with 360. Both include unlimited users, and HackerRank says annual billing saves 20% over paying monthly. Extra attempts are $20 each, or $15 pre-bought on annual Pro. Enterprise is custom. HackerRank's terms say unused attempts expire at the end of each billing cycle.

How much does TunnelQuiz cost?

As of October 2026, TunnelQuiz has four plans: Free ($0, 50 credits a month that lapse at month end), Essential ($34 a month billed yearly, 150 credits a month, 5 seats), Pro ($87 a month billed yearly, 250 credits and 10 AI credits a month, 20 seats) and Business (quoted). Yearly billing is 12% off the monthly rate. Prices are in US dollars with no tax added. In India the same plans are ₹1,319 and ₹3,519 a month billed yearly, plus 18% GST. One credit is one candidate sitting, and top-ups cost $0.38 a credit or less.

Does TunnelQuiz run code?

Not yet. Pro accepts coding answers in 19 languages and an AI grades them against your question, but the code is not compiled or run and there are no hidden test cases. Running code against test cases is coming soon. Until then, use TunnelQuiz for aptitude and fundamentals and a coding platform such as HackerRank for the shortlist.

What does HackerRank use to catch cheating?

Its Secure Mode enforces full screen, blocks copy and paste, prevents a second monitor and alerts on tab switches. On top of that it lists webcam snapshots with AI checks for missing or extra faces, phone detection in the webcam feed, screenshot analysis, session replay and AI plagiarism detection for code. A Desktop App that monitors at the operating-system level is Enterprise only.

Is HackerRank or TunnelQuiz better for campus placements in India?

Use them in sequence. The first round of a campus drive is usually a large aptitude test, where TunnelQuiz's per-candidate pricing and whole-screen captures matter most. HackerRank charges per attempt, in US dollars on its pricing page, and suits the smaller coding round that follows. TunnelQuiz also sells in rupees in India: ₹1,319 a month billed yearly for Essential, plus 18% GST.
